Year 2

Each term, learning in Year 2 is carefully planned around an engaging theme that deepens children’s knowledge, encourages independent thinking and supports progress across all areas of the curriculum.

 Spring Term Theme Overview

During the spring term, Year 2 children will be learning through the theme “Let’s Investigate”. This theme encourages children to ask thoughtful questions, make predictions and explore ideas in more depth across the curriculum.

Children will develop their knowledge and skills through research, discussion and practical investigations. They will be supported to think critically, explain their reasoning and apply what they have learned in different subjects, including English, maths, science and the wider curriculum.

The overview below provides a snapshot of the learning planned for the term and ways families can support learning at home, as children continue to build independence and confidence while striving to achieve, belong and thrive in Year 2.

Autumn Term Theme Overview

In the autumn term, Year 2 children will be learning through the theme “Let’s Explore!”. This theme encourages children to broaden their understanding of the world, make connections across subjects and build on the skills they developed in Year 1.

Learning will be more structured and increasingly independent, with children applying their reading, writing and maths skills across the wider curriculum. Through investigation, discussion and practical activities, children will develop confidence in explaining their thinking and learning from experience.

The overview below provides a snapshot of the key learning for the term and suggests ways families can support learning at home, as children continue to achieve, belong and thrive in Year 2.
