School Assessment Information
At Wrockwardine Wood Infant School and Nursery assessment is a vital part of understanding and supporting your child’s learning journey. Below is an overview of the assessments your child will take part in during the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1 (KS1).
Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA)
The Reception Baseline Assessment is a short, practical, activity-based assessment completed in the first six weeks of your child starting Reception. It focuses on:
-
Language, communication and literacy
-
Mathematics
Children will complete tasks using practical resources, while teachers record responses on a digital device. The RBA is not used to label or track individual pupils. No scores are shared with parents or children. The results are used only at the end of Year 6 to measure overall school progress.
Teachers will receive a brief summary of each child’s performance to help plan teaching for the first term.

The 7 areas of learning and development are:
-
Communication and Language
-
Physical Development
-
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
-

Development Matters (Non-Statutory Guidance)
This guidance outlines typical pathways of development for young children. It supports staff in planning learning that reflects each child’s individual needs.
Accurate and proportionate assessment is essential to ensure each child gets the right support at the right time.
Progress Check at Age 2
This is a short summary of your child’s development around their second birthday. It identifies strengths and areas where additional support might be needed. It may be completed in partnership with your child’s health visitor.
Early Years Foundation Stage Profile (End of Reception)
At the end of Reception, children are assessed against the 17 Early Learning Goals. Their level of development is described as:
-
Expected – meeting the expected level
-
Emerging – not yet reaching the expected level
Teachers make these assessments based on regular observations. This data is moderated within the school and with local schools to ensure consistency and is submitted to the local authority.
Parents are invited in each term to discuss their child’s development, view their learning journal, and hear about next steps. A full written report is provided in the summer term.

Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2)
Assessment continues through observation, classwork, and discussions. More formal assessments are carried out at the end of topics, half-termly or termly, to help teachers understand what children have remembered and the progress they have made.
Year 1 Phonics Screening Check
This national check takes place each June and assesses your child’s ability to decode and blend words using phonics. It helps ensure children are on track to become confident, fluent readers.
Year 1 & 2 Assessment
Teachers assess children’s progress throughout the year. Your child may be:
-
Working below the expected standard
-
Working at the expected standard
-
Working at greater depth within the expected standard
Children working below expectations receive additional support. Those working above are given opportunities to broaden and deepen their learning.
Parents receive termly reports and are invited to consultation meetings to discuss progress and next steps.
Year 2 SATs (Optional)
While no longer mandatory, our school chooses to continue using the KS1 SATs in Year 2. These assessments help us identify where children may need further support before moving into Key Stage 2.
Assessments may include:
-
Reading
-
Mathematics
-
Grammar, punctuation and spelling
The results help guide teaching and provide useful information for parents and teachers.
See Parent/Carer information Slideshow below for more information about Year 2 assessments:
