The Nature of Music

Music is a universal language and one of the highest forms of human creativity. For many children, the music they connect with becomes part of the story of their lives, adding colour, emotion, and meaning to their experiences.

Learning music is a vital part of a broad and balanced education. When taught well, it offers children the chance to create music, think musically, and, most importantly, to become more musical.

Curriculum Intent

Our high-quality music curriculum is designed to engage, inspire, and ignite a love of music in every child, nurturing their talents as musicians and supporting their wider development.

Through musical experiences, children develop a wide range of skills essential for school readiness and lifelong learning, including:

  • Intellectual, emotional, and social development

  • Language and communication

  • Motor coordination

  • Memory, listening, and concentration

  • Literacy through songs and rhymes

Music supports children’s ability to express emotions, whether to uplift, energise, or soothe. It helps them understand the purpose of music in the world—whether for celebration, recreation, or artistic expression.

Curriculum Implementation

We deliver our intent through a rich, practical, and engaging programme of musical activities. We aim to:

  • Develop children’s musical understanding through high-quality teaching and well-planned, progressive sequences of lessons

  • Provide regular opportunities for children to engage in the four key strands of music:

    • Listening

    • Appraising

    • Composing

    • Performing

  • Ensure children explore the eight elements of music:

    • Pitch

    • Duration

    • Dynamics

    • Tempo

    • Timbre

    • Texture

    • Structure

    • Notation

We also provide opportunities for children to:

  • Listen to a wide range of live and recorded music, including from different cultures, styles, and genres

  • Play and learn a range of tuned and untuned instruments, encouraging creativity and exploration

  • Speak chants, recite rhymes, and sing expressively

  • Rehearse and perform songs to an audience, building confidence and performance skills

  • Record their own compositions using appropriate technology and tools
